Frequently asked questions

  • How does photo recognition work?

You point the camera at a meal or a drink and tap once. The photo goes to our servers and on to Google Gemini, which names the dish, breaks it into its ingredients and their proportions, and estimates roughly how much food is there. The app then works out the grams per ingredient from that and looks up calories, protein, fat and carbohydrates in a nutrition database that ships inside the app. It takes a few seconds, and the meal lands in your daily log.

  • Why is the estimate sometimes wrong?

Gemini reads a flat image. It cannot see the oil in the pan, the sugar in the sauce, or what is hidden under the top layer. Portion size is inferred from how much food appears to be there, never weighed, and the nutrition figures are averages for each ingredient rather than your actual recipe. Mixed dishes, homemade food and unusual portions are where it slips most. Treat every number as an estimate, not a measurement.

  • How do I fix a dish that was recognised wrong?

Open the meal from your log and adjust it — change the portion, replace or delete an item, add one, or change the time — and the calories and macros follow, with your daily totals updating straight away. If the whole recognition was wrong, open the meal, tap the overflow menu and choose Flag wrong result — that tells us the meal was misread. The flag deliberately carries no photo, no dish names and no numbers.

  • Can I log food without taking a photo?

Yes. Add a meal by hand and search the food database. The app searches the pack bundled on your device first. When that has no good match, it sends the text you typed, plus a numeric text embedding computed on your device, to our servers to search our larger food database, and it fetches the detail for an item it does not have yet. That search text is not shared with third parties. Or type the dish and the values yourself. The camera is never the only way in.

  • What happens to my food photos?

A photo is stored in our object storage and, only once you allow AI photo analysis, sent to the Google Gemini API so the dish can be recognised. It then stays attached to that meal so you can look back at what you ate. If no food is found in a photo, no meal is created and the photo is deleted from our servers right after recognition. Deleting a meal removes it — and its photo — from your device right away, and from our servers the next time the app syncs. Delete Account wipes everything at once: every meal, every photo, your profile, weight entries and the account record.

  • Who else gets my data?

Your photo goes to Google Gemini so the dish can be recognised, and your subscription status comes from RevenueCat and Apple. Crash reports go to Sentry (Firebase Crashlytics in app version 1.0); the app's usage events (from app version 1.0.2 including your answers to the onboarding questions) and masked session replays (typed text, the camera view and food photos are hidden) go to Amplitude — the same Amplitude that this website uses and that our recognition service reports into. That recognition service sends Amplitude the model's full response for each photo, never the photo itself, against your anonymous account id, and when you confirm or change a recognised meal, the before and after values are sent to us too. Nobody buys your data and none of it feeds advertising. The Privacy Policy names every one of them and what they receive.

    Who else processes your data

  • Does the app work offline?

Mostly. Your log, manual entries and edits all work with no connection, and your changes sync once you are back online. Food search runs on your device against the built-in database, so common foods work offline too; the wider food-database search, fetching the detail for an item you do not have yet, and photo recognition all need a connection to reach our servers.

  • What can I do without paying?

The first five photo scans are free. After that, photo recognition needs a subscription. Logging food by hand, the built-in food database, your history and everything already saved stay available either way.

  • How do I cancel my subscription?

Billing runs through Apple, not through us, so cancellation happens in your Apple Account: Settings, then your name, then Subscriptions, then Calorie Snap, then Cancel Subscription. Cancelling stops the next renewal and you keep what you paid for until the end of the current period. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription.

Manage subscriptions on Apple (opens in a new tab)

  • I reinstalled the app — how do I get my subscription back?

Open Settings and tap Restore purchases; the same button sits on the paywall. Your subscription belongs to the Apple Account that bought it, so sign in to that account first. If nothing comes back after a restore, email us and mention the Apple Account used for the purchase.

  • How do I delete my account and everything in it?

Open Settings → Account and tap Delete Account. That request itself is immediate and permanent, on your device and on our servers at once — meals, photos, your profile, weight entries and the account record. It cannot be undone, and it does not cancel an active subscription — cancel that with Apple separately.

  • Can I rely on these numbers medically?

No. Calorie Snap is a tracking tool, not a medical device, and its estimates are not medical or dietary advice. Talk to a qualified professional before making decisions about your diet or health, especially with a medical condition or a history of disordered eating.
